Essay 2

Introduction:

The story of stuff by Annie Leonard (Story of Stuff, 2012) is a video about twenty minute. The video show us in interesting way the materials economy which has five steps extraction, production, distraction, consumption and disposal. Annie talks about each one of these steps and what the benefit to the people who have power to make the government follow them by threating the global.

Extraction is taking the planet’s resources like wood, coal, water, animal....Etc. The problem is we using much stuff and the operations for extraction damage our environment and we are not using the stuff in the right way some people buy the stuff for show. We are destroying the planet. We cut the tree and burn the forest and also we create pollution like water pollution and air pollution. Industrial extraction causes many health problems because of the volatility of poisonous gases such as asthma, cancer and liver disease.  “Mining, for example, accounts for only 0.4% of the global workforce, but is responsible for over 3% of fatal accidents at work—about 11,000 per year, about 30 each day”( story of stuff, 2012).

In the production step, we transform raw materials into goods or services. We add toxic chemicals for the raw materials (natural resources) by using energy. In this step, we create many of health problems because of chemical pollution. Also we create environmental problems including climate change and water depletion.  “In the U.S, industry admits to releasing over 4 billion pounds of toxic chemicals a year, pollution which disproportionately impacts low income communities and communities of color” (story of stuff, 2012). We should protect people who work in the factories because they are exposed to toxic substances in every day.

There are four elements of the marketing and one of these elements is distribution. “Distribution is the process of making a product or service available for use or consumption by a consumer or business user, using direct means, or using indirect means with intermediaries”(Wikipedia, 2012). Selling and transporting all stuff in easy and quickly and cheaply way. To maintain the Customers and keep the materials flow moving. We destroy our planet because we use energy to transport this stuff and also we contributing to car traffic when we use the cars to distribution or we use the train or ships and all these ways contribute increasing greenhouse gases.

We must change the consumption patterns because it inequitable. “Consumption is the value of goods and services bought by people. Individual buying acts are aggregated over time and space” (Piana, V, 2001). We should buy what we need and the price should be reasonable. The increase in population leads to increased use of resources and energy and also leads to increased waste. We can divided the consumption to three categories the first one is Durable goods, second is non-durable goods and services. There are many people buy a lot of goods and they are used for short time periods and also without the benefit.

Each system has waste and we should map a plan to re-use these resources and recyclable. Some companies do not care about the workers in the system and we should protect them because they are more vulnerable people to the risk of toxic substances than others. Burn or inject wells with waste is increase the air and water pollution. Disposal the waste is not easy but we should find a solution to preserve our planet.

Consumerism in the UAE:

Life has changed since discovered oil in the UAE. Nowadays, the priorities are more than before, for example, in the past people were worried of their food, clothes and accommodation. However, today people take care of their education, health and other accessories such as smart mobile phones and new devices which are laptops, I pad and tabs because the majority of people have one not because they need them. That is a clear picture of consumerism in the UAE, also business and economic system is increasing. For instant, the numbers of malls are markets go up and that effects on consumerism, people like shopping as much as other things. It is like their favorite hoppy they go shopping if they feel bored or if they feel happy, also they can shopping online so shopping and consuming are the most important things in people lives.

Conclusion:

The movie shows the process of marketing stuff and products. Also it explains how advertisements touch our feeling and how to make us good consumers. Stuff effects on our lives and our communities in positive and negative methods. Finally, the movie gives us tips and suggestions to change our wrong habits and to be simple in our lives.

Eolic power

“Eolic power is the conversion of wind energy into a useful form of energy, such as using: wind turbines to make electrical power, windmills for mechanical power, wind pumps for water pumping or drainage, or sails to propel ships”(Wikipedia, 2012).

Wind power has been used in old era as for navigation of ships depending on sails, for other limited daily activity, but also has been known for other bad effects when having high speed. Also wind power has many different ways to use, in the past the human was using wind power for pumped water. Some region was so far from the river or any source for water so they used wind power to arrive the water, wind pumps provided water for livestock and steam engines. With the development of electric power, wind power found new applications in lighting buildings remote from centrally-generated power. “Throughout the 20th century parallel paths developed distributed small wind plants suitable for farms or residences, and larger utility-scale wind generators that could be connected to electricity grids for remote use of power” (Wikipedia, 2012).

Wind power used by many countries such as Germany, Spain, Denmark, United Kingdom, Romania, Republic of Ireland, Estonia, and Lithonia. Wind power is very easy to use and it is almost electronic. “The total number of using electronic power from wind in 2006 was 74,223 m/watt which is about 1% from universal using. The percentage of producing to consuming about 20% in Denmark, 9% in Spain, 7% in Germany” (Wikipedia, 2012). As a result, the universal producing of using wind power is increasing four times between 2000-2006.

Now there are many programs to improve wind turbine performance and reducing the cost of energy. The most prominent of these programs Sandia’s Wind Energy Technologies program. Sandia specializes in all aspects of wind-turbine blade design and system reliability. Technology supports the world in all parts such as healthy environment and renewable and non- renewable energy and this is why the technology is very important.

Wind is everywhere, the wind around us in nature. Wind is more environmentally-friendly alternative energies than other and it still tapped not complete. There is many way to use wind power we know some of them and there are many that do not know about them. So, let’s talk about some smart uses for wind-powered energy. For instant, wind-powered vehicles: a car work by wind it takes a journey and complete 3,100 mile. It was not 100% powered by the wind, it just an example for using alternative energies. Another uses is wind powered sports, for many years the wind has been used to power sports. “Both literally and figuratively, everything from simple kite-flying to sailing, wind-surfing, hang-gliding, Para-sailing, wind-skiing and more”.

In the future, using of wind power will increase more than now especially in the UAE because the government encourages and supports clean energy. Sheikh Abdulla bin Zayed is interested in these kind of energy. For example, IRENA the International Renewable Energy Agency which is an intergovernmental organization dedicated to renewable energy. In my opinion, all countries should develop their cities by using alternative energies because this keeps their environment healthy and fresh.

Personal Reflection

In this course (1103), I learned many important things that helped me in the class and in my life. First of all, I summarized a lot of articles on various topics that improve my skills and also improve my skills in writing and reading. Furthermore, my teacher mister Gregory teach us how we can get the reference for any article by using bibme and also he teach us how we can get the main idea for the article and then read the whole article and take the supporting point for the main idea and wrote it by our own words. After that we rewrite the essay and put the reference in the end. Now I can summarize any subject in a short period of time. Moreover, now we learn how we can write big essay by using many articles and summarized. In the last class we learned how we can do out line for the essay and we do it as well. Also we learned a new way to communicate with the teacher by using the blogger and this is easy way to save our works and the teacher can see our works. We are happy in the class because mister Gregory don’t give us a lot of works and also when he give us some he didn’t leave us and he sit in the class to help us and if there is no time he welcomes us in his office. I hope to complete this course and get high grade.

Morocco people saves the houbara from extinct. Houbara bustards are endangered. Abu Dhabi Government had built wildlife propagation and produced about 60,000 birds. Many countries put fund for Houbara Conservation such as UAE and Kazakhstan and now China and Turkmenistan lean about this project. The Morocco center has ambitions to release 15,000 birds per season. Last year they released 12,000 birds. The worker trains the birds to be familiar with the people for breeding. Before they release the bird, the worker put the birds in the cages and covered with cloth. They release the birds after hunting season. After they release the bird the scientists keep track of the bird. The program is a success and the birds have increased. The author explains this point thusly,The success of the programme can be measured though their density in the wild” (Todorova, V 2011).

                                                    Masdar Project

Masdar planned to build wind farm near the Saudi Arabian border. 7 per cent is from renewable energy within nine years. Government has reported the 7 per cent target by 2020. Masdar is subsidiary of Mubadala development which owned by the Abu Dhabi government. The new plant would produce 100 mw. For wind, 100mw which is blank. Masdar will get the contract on January. The study will complete in the next six weeks.  It is difficult to improve wind power in GCC than solar power. Especially, in the UAE it is very limited. According to Masdar’s estimates, plant would take at least $200m build. Wind is unique project and it will attract markets and banks in Dubai.
